I Prefer. . .

This is all that's left of my books.
(Except for two shelves full in my bedroom.)

Dark chocolate to candy.
Walking to driving.
Writing essays to writing research papers.
*William Blake to T.S. Eliot.
Thrift stores to new stores.
Wendell Berry to Al Gore.
Early mornings to late nights.
Anne Morrow Lindbergh to Betty Friedan.
Reading to watching anything.
Romantic to Enlightenment.
Blue cheese to cheddar.
Used bookstores to Amazon.
Black coffee to coffee-flavored milk.
E.F. Schumacher to Adam Smith.
My neighborhood natural foods store to Costco.
Slow life to busy life.
Contemplation to analysis.
Wood stove to electric heat.
Bare feet to shoes.
Very thin-ruled paper to wide-ruled.
Geology to Biology.
Mechanical pencil to pen.
Hand-written letters to emails.
Blogs to Facebook.
A tent to a hotel room.
Back roads to highways.
Global thinking to linear.
Phone calls to text messages.
High desert sky to valley sky.
Argumentation to symbolic logic.
Anything to statistics.
Moccasins to high heels.
Cardigans to pull-over sweaters.
Hand-washing dishes to dishwashers.
Old books to new books.

Just to name a few. . .
How about you?

*Later: Had a back and forth text-message conversation
with my son. He said, "William Blake to T.S. Eliot?!
Why does it have to be Eliot?"
Yeah, Aaron, I know. I was wavering on that one
right from the start. I still am.

    1. No soda for me, either, but out here we call it "pop"! I'm a water person. :-)

  2. Great idea for a blog post, Susan! And no wonder I feel so much akin to you. :) I will be giving this a try on my blog this week, and likely several will be dittos of yours.
Since I am currently reading Wendell Berry, that one really struck a chord. And dark chocolate to candy, back roads to highways, as well as reading over watching anything...me too!

    1. Well, if you do this, Silvana, I'll look forward to reading it!

  3. I think I'm with you on just about all of those. I have to admit, though, that I was a big T.S. Eliot fan in high school. I'll have to revisit that. And I might like biology, though yes, I love geology, especially in Oregon. And I do like a good pen, or a soft pencil. But hey, what are three answers out of, um, a lot?

    Great idea!

    1. Haha, Laura, Eliot and Blake was almost removed from the list! And Aaron and I had a back and forth text-conversation about that choice. (He said, "Why did it have to be Eliot?" Which is a good question!) Honestly, they are kind of at two extremes for me, and I would fall more in between them. I still waver over this one. And my pencils are soft lead, too. I buy almost the softest lead that's sold for my mechanical pencils. Enjoyed your reply.

    2. Ha, I'm with Aaron! There are plenty of others I'd throw under the bus before Eliot, obfuscating as he is.

    3. Did I just say, "Throw under the bus?"! That was a bit extreme!

    4. Well, with a choice that I knew could be sort of provocative (for *some* people!), you're justified in saying "throw under the bus"! :-) And where Eliot might be obfuscating, Blake might be over-the-top emotional! So, I still waver. I like them both for very different reasons.

  4. I resonated with much of your list...except that I love pens, dishwashers and text messaging :)
I prefer cotton to synthetics...the country to city...skirts to jeans...beef to beans. ;)

  5. Hey Aimee. I'm with you on the beef vs. beans (which might surprise some people). There is almost nothing I love more than a really great steak. Oh, and I only prefer pencils if they are mechanical pencils and I have a hard surface beneath my paper. I do a fair amount of text messaging with my kids, but when they want to have long conversations, I'll usually say, "Call me!" :-) Or I'll turn of my phone for part of the day because the constant texts disrupt my ability to think. :-)

  6. Love this post, Susan. I share so many of your preferences except I'm a biology over geology girl. A few more ... I prefer skirts to shorts, spring to fall, woods to lawn, Thai cuisine to Italian (sorry, Laura), homemade quilts to match-y storebought bedding, standard to automatic transmission, silver to gold, paint to wallpaper, farmers markets to grocery stores, wool to acrylic, cotton to polyester, clothesline to dryer, washing dishes to unloading the dishwasher, acoustic to electric, pie to cake, red wine to white, made from scratch to packaged ... Once you start, it's hard to stop

    1. Well, I *think*, Anonymous, that I am with you on this, but my lack of knowledge doesn't allow me to know for sure! I'll trust your judgment. :-) (Why do I think I know who you are?!)

    2. Sorry Susan, I should have signed my name. I wish we "knew" each other, but I am Anonymous because I have not set up an "account" for myself. Maybe someday...

My kids are string players, so while I too have no real knowledge, when I listen to them play, I know: I prefer a Beethoven trio to a Mozart quartet. At least for now...

      Bless you~Mary

    3. Oh, Mary, I'm sorry to have put you on the spot (obviously, I was totally off in my guess about who was writing!), but it was nice to hear from you. Lucky you get to listen to beautiful music being played by your own children. I do miss the days of my girls playing piano from morning til night! :-)

  9. Yes, Amy, that's exactly what I was doing! Writing about you. :-)

  10. I'm going to have a think about this! Clogs to stilettos is my only contribution thus far.

    1. Yikes, Lucille. Stilettos will never be happening on me! (I don't get why women wear them.)
